For those of us who already have a room. Can we use these rooms per usual or do we need to avoid taking items in/out of the chest? Or even entering the room?

Just trying to cover all bases...

Yes, use your chests and rooms like normal. Just don't turn in your key or, more importantly, attempt to rent a new room.
