Servers were down...Tales of a stupid Power Company!!

If some of you tried to get in yesterday evening, sorry about that. The power company was working on the lines on my street and managed to send a serge though that took out our core switch and both game servers. I'm guessing UPS's do you no good when the switch isn't protected. I'm guessing the serge following the copper connections and entered through the NIC.

Good news is the DB server is fiber connected so it was unharmed..that's also where the Vault lives so that was a double plus.

I ran to a computer store a few blocks away and picked up a new switch and 2 new PC's and had everything restored from tape in an hour (How's that for DR). It's a good thing my wife is out of town or she'd have had kittens. I picked up a UPS for the switch and I hope that will help this not to happen again.

Anyway I'm posting this because if anyone would like to help me cover the cost I'd be grateful. Here's the break down

Server $325.00
Server $325.00
Switch $145.00
UPS $100.00

So Total last night was $895.00

Anything will help. However if you cannot give don't worry My wife doesn't need to know everything that happens

Anyway servers are up and seem to be stable, if anyone notices anything strange let me know, tape backups are not always 100% foolproof.

Oh I do have a call into the Power Company though I'm told there isn't much I can do about it but I wanted them to know what they did!!

If you didn't talk to a manager at the power company, you might want to reconsider calling again. 1st level reps have no authority. Perhaps someone higher up could get you some satisfaction. (Or would this fall under insurance company?)

I talked to some higher ups and told me part of the contack I signed when getting power turned on releases them from have to pay me back. I could turn this over to my homeowners but if any of you have had to do that before you'll understand me when I say....not worth it...

besides taking 6 to 8 months to complete my claim I think I have to cover the first $1000 anyway so that's not goign to help me any...LOL Ya insurance....you have to have it but in the long run it's not worth it.

But hey atleast I learned my DR procedures are top notch.

hehehehehhehe thats a good one, well Terry i can tel you that in Poland most of peoples gets $ 600 and such computer parts costs equal here

man I hate to hear this. Friday I'll donate to the cause. Until then everyone who can help should. Come on people if you have a little extra send it in. Terry shouldn't have to fit the entire bill so we have a great place to hang out.
