Metagaming Posts

Post by SinbadSam » Wed Dec 19, 2007 4:47 am

Ok when a character posts something IC/IG in a thread, does not mean that every player that logged from that location automatically is there when they were not even logged in at the time the IC/IG post happened.

That is called metagaming. That is a bad thing on all worlds.

Now if you wish to leave your character logged in and was there then the IC/IG attempt at posting was there, then it is not metagaming.

Once a character logs from a world,,,the knowledge/information data steam ceases to occur. That is a function of the NWN game engine. Yes it may be less than optimal but again if you wish leave that character logged in,,,all day,,,interesting things may occur/happen.

I may or may not agree with you, not sure. Clean that up a bit if you could so it's meaning is more clear.

OOC posts in IC forums is a big no no, especially accusing other people of stuff, which may or may not be correct.

If you have an issue please PM a team member rather than take matters into your own hands.

I'm also curious if the implication here is that for a an IC post to be made, then the PC ~must~ be logged in to that particular location at that particular time?

I certainly agree that people shouldn't be making posts if their PC is on an entirely different world or should refrain from making posts in different cities without a reasonable amount of time between the respective posts.

If you're simply saying that it's metagaming to IC'ly post while not logged in with your PC, then i'd be inclined to disagree because it would often mean excessive afk time while logged in as well as restricting people from using spare time to keep their characters immersed in the world while they may not be able to actually log the PC in.

I see this as a very tough call. Everyone has their own standards that they hold for themselves and for others.

A recent ruling on Avlis may well have been stirred up by me. I posted on an OOC guild thread stating that I could not post ICly on another thread as the character was off world at the time. A day later the team view came out. I agree completely that you cannot possibly post ICly if you are not on the world.

I will admit to being a bit excessive in my views of IC but I only hold myself to those standards and do not expect anyone else to do the same. If I post in a town/city, my character will go to that location and if possible find the board, stand by it and emote leaving the note. I will then go back later to the forums and post. If my character posts that they pray at temple X, they will go to temple X and pray and not do the *prays silently*. If I get a PM and the character is not on that world I do reply to it OOCly as a courtesy to the other player explaining the lack of a quick IC reply and I will then follow up with an IC reply upon return of the character. This is how I play but I do not expect anyone else to be anywhere near this excessive.

this depends 100% on what is posted.

For example. You log out for the night and shortly after you make camp and leave someone passes the area and does something. IC your character is camped there and would see it even though the player has logged out.

Also there are other issues, such as..if you enter the library and log out while emoting doing research..the IC your character is working in the library while you are offline and would see anything that goes on in the library. Or if you emote sending your character out to patrol the island alone and log out then theer is a chance your character could be in an area when something happens.

Having to Log out is a OOC and Real life issue, IC your character is around Nuvar unless they travel off world. Having to log out is a Engine issue not a IC issue.

Dae is right, it is a tough call. To paraphrase Justice Potter, I would be hard pressed to define what constitutes metagaming in an IC "emote post", but I know it when I see it. I guess if I had a gun to my head and were forced to define some guidelines they'd be the following: Is it reasonable for the PC to have been there/done that? Is the player spamming other IC forums so that their PC seems to be in all places at all times? Does it really matter?

Just my two cents.

Ok some examples.

Example 1

Player 1 takes character 1 to a secluded location, checks out the location and verifies that only one other character is there a npc.

Player 1 does IC/IG then posts it to the Black Swan.

Player 2 reads the post by player 1 in the Black Swan, decides that since that secluded location was where he logged out, but was not online when the IC/IG occurred, that he can put a follow up post showing that his character was there during the entire IC/IG done by player 1.

Example 2

Player 3 logs logs out at the campfire in Old Town, while player 3 is logged off, a big DM event occurs at the campfire, Player 4 does a IC/IG post in Black Swan.

Player 3 reads the post by player 4, logs back in and immediately makes conversations showing that his character has full knowledge of what occurred while he is logged off. Player 3 never asked any around if any thing had occurred either.

Example 3

Does this mean a player 5 reading a Characters Journal, can use the information IG with out any communication from the journal poster, and can said player 5 posts into the character journal?

I can only answer your example 3.

Journals are OOC here. They basically add a bit of spice and depth to the character. Being OOC though causes a problem in passig information at times. The post I placed there is one way the team approved passing the information without spending dozens of hours reciting Arkaz history for each person that needed it.
