First, love the token system, and thanks DL for dealing with my request!

Just a (hopefully) quick question:
Is there a standard IC explanation for token enhanced items? Something like "oh, I managed to form a stronger connection to this magic item, and unlocked more of its abilities?"

Not really unless the DM adds it into the description of the item.

Ok. So... The items and their abilities do ICly exist though, right? As opposed to being an attribute of the character, somehow?

(Vaugely remember something about magic items used by NPCs sometimes being a makeshift way of modeling "racial abilities," of some sort. Think it was with the... Sereg? From a decade ago and on Avlis, lol. Mentioning it as an example, not precedent.)

Basically... I'd like to be able to have Einar actually state where his armor came from, and how it got its new abilities, if and when he wishes to do so. . Guessing my making up an explanation would be a no go, though...

Most of the time many items are given by a DM as a result of a particular plot. Some DMs will run a mini plot to give a character an item they have request via the token system, but that is up to each DM who takes the request to build the item.

Some item upgrades are done IC, by an NPC enchanter for example. Some are are just done quickly OOC. In the event that it was done IC, you can of course discuss it and talk about it IC. If it was just done, with no IC explanation by the DM, then no you don't get to make it up. You could say "I don't know I bought x magic item over time and it has just been growing more powerful, I am not really sure why". A lot of inexplicable stuff happens on arkaz just because the creator wants it to. If you have a specific idea, and it has not been done yet, you can request it done IC that way, and if a DM is moved to do it for you that way, that's fine. No guarantees or promises though, and it will likely take longer to get it done in any event.

What do people usually do when it comes to upgrading the items though? The elaborate plot or just make stuff up?

Most people just do it OOC, having said that, if you want it IC, we can accommodate
