Hello;
I don't understand how the language system is coded, so I'd like to ask a question.
Ronan keeps on understanding languages he doesn't know. He IDs the language correctly, and it actually translates it to common some percentage of the time on my screen. I would like to know if this is a bug or not? He has a very high int and lore skill, and I was wondering if it was intentional
Thanks.
It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.

I can tell you that yes, mechanically, knowing a language is Lore/Int based, so from that side, it is not a "bug."
I will need to let people more knowledgeable then I answer for what is intended on the IC "rule." 8)

I have ignoring that all the time thinking that Dima was not supposed to know those things. Now I find out that maybe he should, he has much higher int and lore is pretty high too then most people would guess. I have question though. Since he is from off world really his lore should have no application in most cases on Arkas right?
Thanks,
Dennis
My RP strategy for playing a low wisdom character is to basically just be myself.

As a hint for those new to the language system. Type "!list languages" (without quote marks) on the talk line. In the combat screen you will see each language your character can speak. Some are auto assigned like magic, elven or psionic, as examples, based upon your characters classes or race. To activate a language type in "!speak (the listed language)" (without the quotes and the language would be something like common, psionic, magic).
As I recall from when this was instituted there are two checks done. One to ID the language and a second to understand it. I personally think there is a problem with the understand because Sonja can get her lore to near 120 and cannot understand some of the most simple ones.
Play with it a bit, it is a lot of fun. Languages can also be taught ICly if you are willing to invest the IG and IC time to do it. The length varies upon the difficultity of the language.

You're fine Dennis: It's a magical world. 8) Being a well rounded plane-walker and of high enough intelligence to understand what is being said is just fine. Learning to understand the language well enough to know how to speak the language back would take practice, time, and lessons, as Daemona said. Language lessons can be very fun... some of the funniest I've been apart of have been "gnomish."
On a side note: Checking to see which languages you know can be a fun surprise. You may know some languages you aren't aware of, based on race or class that you might not expect.
On a side, side note..(hehe) .. Arkaz does not have the same rule as Ysgard on the "magic language." It is not considered "spell only" here.

Meaning that here the magical languages are actual languages that people can converse in and that can be learned by/taught to others?

Yes, Sonja taught Diego and Michiko Draconic. It was done in IC PMs in part but over 50 RL hours each with individual instruction. As DD class involves physical changes to a character I tend to treat others to speak with an accent as well. In the past if you learned on on Arkaz or Hala the teams would communicate and if both sides agree the language was set up on the other world as well.

Though many languages are in fact learnable through IG interactions, a few languages are class specific. These languages can only be acquired through taking said class (its considered part of the learning process of that class). For example, magic is used as the verbal components of spells and rituals. Its not meant to be a language you converse in casually though technically you can. As such, only wizards and sorcerers know Magic. If your character wanted to learn it, they would have to pick up either wizardry or sorcerery. Bard's do not know magic because bardic magic while arcane in nature is drawn from their music. Other class specific languages include animal, druidic, thieves cant, and necromantic.
Hope this helps.
