Burning Own Hands/cone spells question

I cast Burning Hands several times and I noticed something weird.
When not in combat, I can cast the spell without problems.
When ín combat, I burn myself with the spell too.
Considering that a cone is supposed to originate from the caster (with him/her standing safely behind it).
I wonder if someone can tell me why.
I also wonder now if all cone spells do harm the caster.
Either way, this effectively makes one of my spell selections as sorcerer near useless.
Some kind of warning would have been nice.
So maybe someone can update the wiki (http://www.arkaz.com/lore/index.php?tit ... ning_Hands) too.
