There is one major rule for CvC. You MUST set hostile before attacking, so familiars, summons and spells work correctly. This is an engine issue.

Please remember that you should always set hostile before attacking another PC. There are no exceptions.

Bump! This also applies to Summons and Familiars as they are extensions of the PC. If you want to take down a Summons or Familiar, set the owner to hostile first.
