On a mage tournament the last one Dae attended in Visi had some additional breakdown. There were a couple of different divisions. Melee/arcane and pure arcane were two of them. Melee/arcane you had a prep time of 60 seconds to draw weapons and buff like crazy and then went at it with weapons. There were spell restrictions also such as no acid sheath type spells and no dispels. Arcane the kept distance and pummeled each other with spells. In certain events there was for considering level any non arcane levels were counted as half value. Go)solo/Sylux organized the last one and there should be an extensive thread either on the Avlis of Visi Taverns. One other thing to bear in mind is the size of the area needed for this to try to keep the general population watching safe with AoE spells, hence the size of the Visi stadium.
She also attended the melee events in Mikona and Kuras. Again there was spell restrictions if your character could use arcane or divine magic. No offensive spells and nothing like acid sheath. Mikona gave you a short buff period before melee started and it was group fighting or as some call it a brawl. Kuras was no prep time but you could cast if you wanted to. Melee does not take a lot of space and should most likely have walled boundaries so the PC does not accidentally step out of the combat area.
I would really suggest starting with melee only and expand on it a bit, maybe similar to Kuras or Mikona depending on how you want to go. This one would be a bit different as I believe the ones on Avlis were restricted to characters on Avlis, off world characters could watch but not participate. ICly it would be kind of hard to build an arena when we are taking collections to rebuild a town and set up the Navy.

The Kuras event was good, but the complete lack of prep-time was painful for characters who are heavily reliant on having at least a few buffs active. The best balance I think I've seen so far was at the last Aarilaxian Scaled Gauntlet, which allowed a little bit of prep time, but only very brief - which allowed melee self-buffers to get a few spells off, but not so many as to tip the odds too far in their favour. As I recall, casting outside of the brief prep period was prohibited.

Well, a thought I had, and might go back to this as it was easier, was a team competition. 3-5 man teams versus each other. Will really need to see what type of interest there is in being in a tourny, and what kind of turnout we can expect. Would also need to think of some type of prizes. Maybe I can bug the DMs for a "Arkaz Combat Champion Belt" or something. *nudge nudge*.
Mostly I just want feedback on what people want to see, and what people are willing to help with. And to keep the humble host from pulling out his hair ((well, I would pull it out if I did not shave my head...lol)).

I agree completely here though the Kuras one was aimed at melee more than a mix like the Aarilaxian event. For pure combat I like Kuras, one spell is about all you can get off. Visi gives way too much time but then it is mage only. I like the Aarilaxian for the mix hands down and although it was not set as team combat, there were obviously teaming done. Casting outside the prep period was prohibited. As for the time permitted maybe some OOC testing to keep things balanced. Restricted spell lists too, like no offensive and no spells that cause damage to the opponent. Although that was prohibited in Kuras I did see cursed bard song which is still a spell even if you want to call it singing and it is AoE.

Tried that once here and never again. The DM's worked for days to get that off Sonja and it altered her bic that needed to be repaired. As it was a static model used to replace her appearance it changed the character speed to that of an NPC.

A couple of minor points Id like to share:
Its a good idea to have a list of things NOT allowed, rather than a list of what you want to happen. Like:
No death spells
No greater sanctuary
No Potions allowed
No healing kits allowed
No charged items allowed
etc
Also, for team competitions it can get pretty hectic, and area affect spells can be misfired hitting spectators/ npcs etc
lastly, dont know if this has been fixed, but timestop spells used to screw up NPC faction status sometimes. That could be an issue.
If there is to be a fighting tourney, Igor will be around to set up the betting pools. I suggest a sign up sheet for the tourney organizers, like the old scaled gauntlet used to do, that way people can get interested, talk trash RP style to each other, when they see the brackets and who is going against who (not to mention allow longer time frames for bets to be laid and odds to be made )
oddsmaking is pretty simple, if you have bets coming in the odds tilt towards whoever is getting the most money laid on them.

Thanks for the feedback, it is really helpful. For the next festival I do want to try and get it organized early, advertise hard, and delegate delegate delegate. Terror suggested a two day event, and honestly think that is the way to go.
Thinking the Guards and/or Army for running the melee tourny, and Mage School for the mage tourny, if we have each, or maybe combined if we go with a different format.
For merchants, I want to try to get several offworld ones there, and maybe charge a small stall fee or something. Run it similar to the Ferrell trade auction, as Sonja suggested to me previously. Maybe make a thread on the marketplace forums where they can list sale items beforehand.
I was thinking the formal dance could be nice, and either hire a bard to perform, or have an npc band there? Cover charge of course going to whatever the cause is for that one.
Anyone that is interested in taking on and running part of the festival, let me know. I am envisioning a community event, where anyone that wants, can shine during their section of it.

Just had idea to pay the performers, and to help raise money. Commercial sponsors. or Patrons. Could list them on the posters for the festival.
